The term “gate to plate” takes on a new meaning in the Wairarapa thanks to Rannoch Meats, a family run business on the outskirts of Greytown. Julian and Fiona Downs are committed to providing top quality beef direct from their farm to the plate, guaranteeing traceability and knowledge of where the food has come from. The couple’s Red Devon cattle, an English breed brought to New Zealand in the early nineteenth century for use in haulage teams and to provide meat and milk, are grazed on rich and varied pastures that help produce a marbled textured meat full of flavour. Their farming practices ensure the animal’s welfare is respected as they believe that healthy, happy animals produce better quality beef. Trust House group executive chef John Kari has selected premium cuts of Red Devon for The Farriers menu specifically for their flavour and characteristics.
